ABOUT   JOAN

Picture
I live in Melbourne, Australia, with my retired, jack-of-all-trades husband, a bonkers (but adorable) Jack Russell terrier named Sparky, and Meesha, a fluffy black cat who will run you down for sardines. Our three wonderful children have all grown up and flown the nest but we get together for regular family lunches.
When I'm not writing I love to travel, do yoga, walk Sparky, bake bread, grow herbs and vegetables, swim in the ocean, drink wine, eat chocolate, and read. Not necessarily in that order.
Before I became a writer I was a marine biologist. My scuba diving days are over but I still love to potter around the intertidal zone. I’m a long time member of Toastmasters. I joined to overcome my fear of public speaking and stayed for fifteen years because ordinary people tell the most fascinating stories about their lives.
I’ve written some books and won the odd award. You can check them out here.

What I'm reading

Where The Crawdads Sing by by Delia Owens
Beautiful writing but somewhat implausible. The first third I was hooked but gradually fell out of love with it.

How Not To Be A Boy by Robert Webb
Very funny and touching memoir from a guy who takes a hard look at how boys are raised to be macho.

The Body by Bill Bryson. An astounding number of interesting facts about the workings of the human body delivered with Bryson's usual dry wit. Very readable.

What I'm watching

The Queen's Gambit. A young girl/woman conquers the male dominated world of chess in the 50s & 60s. Loved it.

The Crown: Season4. Binge watched but felt the artistic license taken with Prince Charles and Camilla was unfair. A sad portrait of the British Royal family.

Call My Agent The French version. The characters are charming and the writing is tres amusant.

What I'm Cooking

This week so far it's been bbq salmon and steamed veggies, chicken curry, prawn and veggie Asian stir fry, sour dough bread, and healthy cinnamon buns (healthy yes, tasty not so much although the pureed date and cinnamon filling is inspired).
My garden is now producing snow peas, green beans, zucchinis, rocket, and lots of fresh herbs. I see lots of great veggie meals in our future.

What I'm Writing

Book 2 in my Sweetheart, Montana series, previously Brianna's story,
now has an official title - SAY I DO. I finished Nov 30 and turned it in. Doing the happy dance!

What I'm Grateful For

Australia has successfully squashed the corona virus and we're out of lock down. My state of Victoria has virtually eliminated it. Zero cases and zero deaths for 33 days and counting. Hooray!!! Thanks to our strong government leadership and the vast majority of Australians following covid safe guidelines. Not easy but the rewards are worth it.
