ABOUT   JOAN

Picture
I live in Melbourne, Australia, with my retired, jack-of-all-trades husband, a bonkers (but adorable) Jack Russell terrier named Sparky. Our three wonderful children have all grown up and flown the nest but we get together for regular family lunches.
I love travel, yoga, walking Sparky, baking bread, gardening, swimming in the ocean, wine, chocolate, and reading - not necessarily in that order.
Before I became a writer I was a marine biologist. My scuba diving days are over but I still love to potter around the intertidal zone. I’m a long time member of Toastmasters. I joined to overcome my fear of public speaking and stayed for fifteen years because I made some great friends and because seemingly ordinary people tell the most fascinating stories about their lives.
I’ve written a bunch of books and won the odd award. You can check them out here.

What I'm reading

Wifedom by Anna Funder. About George Orwell's "invisible" wife who had so much influence on his career. Great writing and a compelling story.

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. Held my interest but it wasn't a book I felt I just had to get back to.

Written In Blood by Caroline Graham. Book 4 in the series of novels on which the TV series Midsummer Murders is based. OMG, I love these books! Great writing and fully developed, flawed but likeable characters. The books are so much better than the TV show, just wish there were more of them!

What I'm watching

The Americans. An old series about a couple who appear to be average, everyday Americans but who are really KGB agents. In depth exploration of the effects of their 'work' on their teenage kids and the evolving moral dilemmas as they befriend their FBI neighbour. Terrific writing and cast. Warning: Frequent and often brutal violence.

Nobody Wants This. Excellent rom com that's often lol funny. Kristen Bell stars as a shiksa sex podcaster who falls for Adam Brody, a hot but seriously religious Rabbi. Again, great writing and cast.

Fisk. Season 3 of this low key and wryly funny Australian comedy starring Kitty Flanagan as a wills and estate lawyer. Sounds boring but it's not. Love it!

What I'm Cooking

Salad, salad, and more salad. You know how you get punnets from the garden store with eight tiny seedlings? I planted two punnets (so I'd have two different types of lettuce) and they're all ripening at once!

What I'm Writing

Nothing new on this front. I got the rights back to my Harlequin Superromances so I'm working on updating the stories, giving them a new cover and getting them back out there. It could be a long process!

I'm also writing my memoirs, purely for my children to read and someday, grandchildren.

What I'm Grateful For

I'm going to be a grandma! First grand baby and so very exciting. Counting down to a pre-Christmas baby.
