ABOUT   JOAN

Picture
I live in Melbourne, Australia, with my retired, jack-of-all-trades husband, a bonkers (but adorable) Jack Russell terrier named Sparky. Our three wonderful children have all grown up and flown the nest but we get together for regular family lunches.
I love travel, yoga, walking Sparky, baking bread, gardening, swimming in the ocean, wine, chocolate, and reading - not necessarily in that order.
Before I became a writer I was a marine biologist. My scuba diving days are over but I still love to potter around the intertidal zone. I’m a long time member of Toastmasters. I joined to overcome my fear of public speaking and stayed for fifteen years because I made some great friends and because seemingly ordinary people tell the most fascinating stories about their lives.
I’ve written a bunch of books and won the odd award. You can check them out here.

What I'm reading

The Hallmarked Man by Robert Galbraith. Book 8 in the Cormoran Strike series. Omg, I never want this series to end but I'm desperately hoping Strike and Robin finally get together. Amazing writing and compulsive reading.

Detection Unlimited by Georgette Heyer. Inspector Hemmingway Book 4. People love her romance novels but my faves are her mysteries. Quirky characters, sometimes unrealistic plots, but always humorous and very readable.

The Ledge by Christian White. A riveting Australian crime/thriller novel. Small town, group of friends, a deadly secret. And an incredible twist at the end. I immediately reread the book looking for the clues. They were there but expertly hidden. Highly recommended.

What I'm watching

Find My Agent. The French version of this funny, emotional and unpredictable series about a talent agency in Paris. Great characters, awesome writing. So good.

Good Cop, Bad Cop. Detective series set in Washington State but filmed on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. Play spot the subtropical foliage in the supposed Pacific Northwest! Funny, a bit cringe at times but it kept me coming back for more with a great cast and writing.

Slough House. Season 5. Well, not yet, but it's coming very soon and I can't wait. I've read all of the books in the series and they're even better than the TV show. However, I love this adaptation of a group of MI5 rejects who are given boring tasks in the hopes they'll quit but end up embroiled in dangerous missions and somehow bumble their way through.

What I'm Cooking

Sourdough, focaccia, soups, hearty salads. Technically it's Spring here but the weather is still cool enough for winter meals.  I planted my veggie garden last weekend though so I'm looking forward to summer.

What I'm Writing

I'm writing my memoirs, purely for my children to read and someday, grandchildren. I may never get around to republishing my old Harlequin books as I'm now obsessed with an old hobby that got pushed aside for writing but I've recently taken up again -- watercolour painting. There isn't enough time in the day or in one lifetime for all the things I'd like to do!

What I'm Grateful For

My first grandchild, a gorgeous little boy who is as cute as he is sweet natured. Someone said, you love your children but you fall in love with your grandchildren. So very true!
