ABOUT   JOAN

Picture
I live in Melbourne, Australia, with my retired, jack-of-all-trades husband, a bonkers (but adorable) Jack Russell terrier named Sparky. Our three wonderful children have all grown up and flown the nest but we get together for regular family lunches.
I love travel, yoga, walking Sparky, baking bread, gardening, swimming in the ocean, wine, chocolate, and reading - not necessarily in that order.
Before I became a writer I was a marine biologist. My scuba diving days are over but I still love to potter around the intertidal zone. I’m a long time member of Toastmasters. I joined to overcome my fear of public speaking and stayed for fifteen years because I made some great friends and because seemingly ordinary people tell the most fascinating stories about their lives.
I’ve written a bunch of books and won the odd award. You can check them out here.

What I'm reading

The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith. Another Cormoran Strike novel. This might be Galbraith's best yet.

Shrines of Gaity by Kate Atkinson. I want so badly to love it because I love her Jackson Brodie novels but sadly this one isn't grabbing me.

Exiles by Jane Harper. Another great Aussie mystery by this author who's become an auto-buy for me.

Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty. I've read this one before but I love her stories so don't mind reading it again.

What I'm watching

Three Pines. TV series based on Louise Penny mystery novel. Great cast and interesting storyline.

Colin From Accounts. Quirky Australian rom-com. Very funny, with great chemistry between the two leads. Not surprising as they're married in real life.

Tried but couldn't get into: Chivalry, The English.

What I'm Cooking

Finally, summer has arrived which means lots of healthy salads! My veggie garden is producing plenty of lettuce and we have a glut of snow peas. Yum. Plus I've been experimenting with my new air fryer. Great for chicken wings and roast potatoes. Not so great for baking bread but admittedly, the loaf was too big.

What I'm Writing

Nothing new on this front. I got the rights back to my Harlequin Superromances so I'm working on updating the stories, giving them a new cover and getting them back out there. It could be a long process!

I'm also writing my memoirs, purely for my children to read and someday, grandchildren.

What I'm Grateful For

No flooding or bushfires near us. Honestly it's been the worst year weather-wise, here in Australia and around the world. I'm grateful to live in a very temperate part of the world. We done our best to future-proof our home with solar panels and a storage battery and completely switched over to electricity from gas heating. I'm grateful that COP 15 agreed to try to preserve 30% of the environment. Just hope we can halt or at least slow down the extinction of species.
